Bolehkah Asma disembuhkan?

SOALAN:
Doktor, saya merupakan pembaca setia Mingguan Malaysia, khususnya perkembangan dunia perubatan. Saya mempunyai seorang anak buah berusia 1 tahun yang disahkan menghidap penyakit asma.
Saya amat bimbang dengan keadaannya dan telah melakukan banyak kajian sama ada penyakit tersebut boleh diubati secara 100 peratus atau tidak. Setakat ini keputusannya amat menghampakan.
Jadi, menerusi kolum ini saya meminta pendapat doktor yang pakar berkenaan asma, adakah terdapat ubat-ubatan untuk menyembuhkan penyakit ini sepenuhnya? Takkanlah kemajuan teknologi sekarang tidak mampu untuk mencari penawarnya?

JAWAPAN:

Asma merupakan satu keadaan di mana saluran pernafasan mengalami kerengsaan dan keradangan. Akibatnya, ia menjadi sempit dan menghasilkan mukus yang berlebihan.
Tanda-tanda asma termasuklah batuk, nafas berbunyi bising (berdesit), nafas tercungap- cungap dan dada terasa ketat. Adakalanya, gejala tercetus dan marak secara tiba-tiba tanpa sebarang alasan.
Antara pencetus yang lazim adalah jangkitan, asap rokok, alahan terhadap debunga, ubat-ubatan, hama debu rumah, senaman dan emosi.
Tidak cukup jelas, apakah yang menyebabkan saluran pernafasan mula-mula mengalami keradangan. Namun, sekiranya seseorang itu mempunyai sejarah keluarga yang menghidap asma, anda juga mungkin mewarisinya.
Penawar asma masih belum ditemui sehingga kini. Ubat-ubatan sedia ada hanya bertujuan mengawal kerengsaan saluran pernafasan, sekali gus mengurangkan gejala serta merencatkan kerosakan berterusan saluran pernafasan.
Sementara itu, pengurusan asma meliputi pendidikan pesakit, mencegah pencetus dan terapi ubat-ubatan. Kajian untuk cuba memahami peranan respons imun terhadap asma dan alahan terus giat dilakukan.
Asma tidak boleh diubati tetapi biasanya kanak-kanak akan sembuh apabila usia mereka meningkat. Kira-kira 80 peratus kanak-kanak penghidap asma akan pulih daripada penyakit mereka apabila mencapai usia 5 tahun.
